How to Soothe a Newborn: Real Tips For New Parents!
Swaddle! No your baby does not hate it, it reminds them of the womb.
Swaddling is a technique that involves wrapping your baby snugly in a blanket, which can be done by folding the blanket or using an already-made swaddle. It's believed to reduce newborn crying, prevent the baby from startling themselves by pulling their arms and legs out of the blanket, and mimic the feeling of being inside the mother's womb.
Play some soothing music (white noise mimics womb noise)
There's no shortage of ways to soothe your newborn, but one of the most effective is playing some soothing music. If you want to go the extra mile, consider using a white noise machine. This device combines sounds such as rain and ocean waves with soft tones that can help drown out other noises in your home.
It's also worth noting that while many parents find classical music—particularly Mozart—to be relaxing for their baby, others prefer other genres or types of songs (such as lullabies). There are plenty of options out there if you're looking for something other than classical music.
While singing is often thought of as a more personal way to calm down your little one and make them happy, keep in mind that you'll probably want to check the volume level before turning up the volume on any speakers or headphones!
Use a pacifier if desired
If you've never been around a baby before, it can be difficult to know what they need. One of the most effective ways to calm a fussy newborn is by using a pacifier as a soothing device.
Pacifiers can be used to calm babies who have trouble with their sucking reflexes and help them sleep, while bottles can be given for feeding purposes if you are breastfeeding or not. (Take a look at paced bottle feeding videos on Youtube if you or your partner is breastfeeding)
Try a warm bath
If their umbilical cord has fallen off! Use warm, not hot, water. It's important to keep the temperature of your baby's bathwater comfortable for them so that they aren't startled or burned by the temperature change when you first put them into it. If a warm bath doesn't sound appealing enough to lure your little one over, swaddle them first then lower them into the water to make a more soothing transition into the bath environment.
Don't leave your baby unattended in the tub. Even if they're asleep while you fill up the tub with warm water. Your best bet is probably just keeping an eye on them while talking on speakerphone with someone else who can help out if needed (and then maybe hanging out in another room) until everything has been cleaned up safely afterward ;)
Give a gentle massage
The massage method is a great way to calm your baby. Gently stroke the head and back, using baby safe oil or lotion if necessary. Massage is also relaxing for you, so it can help you relax too! Massage relieves gas pain as well, it can increase circulation to their brand new digestive system!
Baby wear or do skin-to-skin to help the baby feel safe and comfortable.
Newborns need a lot of comfort. If you want your baby to feel safe and comfortable, try these tricks! Skin to skin with a blanket over both of you, or baby wearing is amazing and so comforting- visualize their face to ensure they aren’t smothered. The more you do it, the easier and faster they will soothe. Try bouncing on a birth/yoga ball while wearing your baby! Babies LOVE movement!
